In 2016, a group of Rice University retired faculty proposed the idea of an association to Provost Marie Lynn Miranda, who approved a Charter (pdf file) and appointed an Inaugural Steering Committee to develop the organization. We thank the Provost for providing guidance, funds, and facilities.
The Steering Committee adopted a set of Interim Bylaws (pdf file) to govern itself until a set of regular Bylaws might be adopted, which occurred on April 17, 2018. In the first three years, the By-laws can be revised as needed by a vote of the Executive Committee. Thereafter, changes to the by-laws must be approved by vote of the members. In June, 2018 the members elected three Directors, one each to fill a one-year, a two-year, and a three-year term. Thereafter, one director will be elected annually for a three-year term. The three elected directors choose co-chairs for the various committees, and the co-chairs will constitute the Executive Committee.
In 2020 the By-Laws were revised to give directors greater flexibility in dealing with election complexities. See below.

Note: for the academic year 2018-2019 there will be four directors rather than three during the transition from the start-up to regular administrative operation.
