2020 July ARRUF Newsletter

screenshot of members in ZOOM meeting July 16 2020

In April ARRUF moved from in-person activities to on-line monthly meetings via ZOOM. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month, and although a principal topic is chosen for each meeting, plenty of time is available for catching up with colleagues and sharing insights and ideas. In fact, sharing interests will be our major theme for the last half of 2020.

The Activities Committee (which needs another co-chair, please, to double the fun) and the Directors have planned a new emphasis on casual conversation to address this anxious time of staying at home and coping with vulnerability and uncertainty. So please join in the General Meetings. Look for interests you have in common with others or would like to explore, and consider what unusual opportunities we have to collaborate on common interests. You may also want to read the engaging article (link below) about Columbia University's retired faculty, who have formed a Saturday morning orchestra, a yoga class, and other special interest groups. ARRUF is poised to launch stunning new interest groups, given Rice's ION Center, new social justice initiatives, and research on hearing loss and technology innovations to support purposeful aging. We can simultaneously create new ways to participate in the university community and build collegiality.

Look for the ZOOM invitation each month on the day BEFORE the meeting; click the link on the third Thursday of each month, and enjoy the smiles.

VICE-PRESIDENT LEVANDER ON REIMAGINING EDUCATION

On June 18th Caroline Levander, Vice-President for Global and Digital Strategy joined ARRUF members on ZOOM to tell about those weeks in spring when faculty transformed their classes to on-line formats and about teaching on-line. She currently writes a blog on Higher Education with Peter Decherney. Read their current analysis of the complexity of on-line education in Education Is a Team Sport. Dr. Levander also described innovative plans for fall classes and explained how some ARRUF members might play new kinds of roles as mentors and coaches.

A GOOD TIME FOR REFLECTION AND LEADERSHIP

Here is President Leebron's Statement. Read it and perhaps reflect on earlier moments of social unrest we've experienced. How can we make a difference in this troubled time? What new roles are possible for retired faculty?

Special Interest Travel Group Launched at JULY 16th ALL-ARRUF ZOOM MEETING

Although Covid-19 has reduced our travel possibilities, ARRUF  members gathered via ZOOM to hear from footloose colleagues and our own Viqui Arbizu-Sabater, who with husband Alfonso, owns a travel company in Seville, Spain. Viqui and Alfonso  provided the anchor travel presentation. Their videos started with a personal glimpse of Viqui gathering fabulous tomatoes from their garden for making s pitcher of gazpacho (we'll share the recipe soon), which they demonstrated making at the end of the presentation. They also showed videos of Spain's historic treasures and diverse regions. After that, organizers Ahmad Durrani and Mark Kulstad shared specific travel materials, including photos from Ahmad and Neelo's trip to Colorado in a camper van. Mark previewed the "destination" for the group' next meeting: New Zealand.

The session kicked off a new special interest group on TRAVEL, and all members are warmly invited to participate. Each member who wants to can share a video or photos and stories; time will be apportioned for spontaneous contributions (in the form of brief comments, or 2-5 min. for more extended travel stories, with or without photos), plus recommendations for guidebooks, fascinating sites, restaurants, and more. Mark Kulstad commented that the group would have much to draw on, given "what must be a rich trove of travel experiences in ARRUF members' lives."
